Want a chance to win a trip to Miami, FL? Then enter the Library's Wrestlemania Reading Challenge, sponsored by YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) and the WWE. Teens in grades 5 - 12 pledge to read 5 books and then complete a special project based on grade level. The Library will judge the entries and pick a winner from each age category (grades 5-6, grades 7-8, grades 9-12) by December 6. The winning entries will be sent to YALSA, and 3 winners from each region will win a trip to Wrestlemania in Miami, FL, on April 1. If one of the winners is from the Library, we'll win $2000 to buy teen materials!

If you would like to make a difference and give a voice to teens in the community by developing teen programs, helping make teen contests, writing reviews, and assisting at library events, TAB is the place for you! TAB can also be worth community service credit at school! TAB meets on the first and third Monday of every month and is for teens in grades 6 - 12. Our outdoor program, Fun in the Sun, is next Thursday, July 21. Registration is required, as is a signed permission form from a parent. The program runs from 6 - 8 PM. We will meet at the Centerville Library and walk together to Stubbs Park. Competitive team activities like water balloon tosses, relay races, and other water games will be played. You will get wet! Be sure to wear weather appropriate clothes and especially gym shoes. In case of rain, Fun in the Sun will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 30 from 2 - 4 PM. This program is for teens going into grades 6 - 12.

Summer of Heroes Just Weeks Away!

The adventure begins on Monday, June 6 as the Washington-Centerville Public Library kicks off another Teen Summer Reading Club, themed Summer of Heroes. Teens entering grades 6 - 12 are eligible to participate in the 8 week program. Simply register at the library's website and submit a title entry every time you finish a book. When you submit a title, select which prize you hope to win, a gift card to Target, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, or iTunes. Read 8 books in 8 weeks to be eligible for grand prizes, including a Nook eReader and parties for you and your friends at places like Archer's, Chaos Room, Laser Web, and Beef O'Brady's. Every Tuesday is a Totally Teen Tuesday during summer. Each week will alternate between video games and Bingo, and approximately 30 prizes will be given away at each TTT! Battle of the Bands is Open!

We are now accepting entries for the 2011 Battle of the Bands! To enter, you must video record your band playing an original song. Upload the song to You Tube and then fill out the entry form here. The deadline for submitting entries is May 15. The public will then vote for their favorite video. The top three vote-receiving bands will compete on June 22 at the Centerville High School Performing Arts Center. The grand prize includes $500 worth of recording time donated by Encore Studios, Inc. and the chance to perform at the Americana Festival. The clinic will run from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm at the Centerville Library. The cost is $50 and you may sign-up in person at either library. In the clinic, you will learn feeding and diapering skills, job hunting techniques, and become certified in infant/child CPR. The clinic is open to ages 11 - 15. The registration deadline is Tuesday, April 12.

Battle of the Bands Returning!

Are you a member of a local teen band or do you know someone who is? If so, enter your band for the 2011 Battle of the Bands and you could be rockin it out in front of a live audience! Beginning April 18 and running until May 15, online entries will be accepted on the library's website. Create a music video of your band performing an original song, upload it to You Tube, and submit your video to the library's website using the online entry form. Public voting for bands who will compete in the June 22 live concert will run May 17 - May 31. The top three bands that receive the most votes will perform at the Centerville High School Performing Arts Center on June 22. Jay Asher Visiting Next Week!

Author Jay Asher will visit the Centerville Library next Tuesday, October 19! Jay wrote the young adult novel Thirteen Reasons Why, which won multiple awards and was a New York Times Bestseller many times over. He will host two programs, one from 4 - 5pm for grades 6 - 12 only (registration required) and one from 7 - 8:30pm for everyone (registration not required, but space may be limited). Take advantage of this very unique opportunity to meet Jay and listen to him speak about his book and issues like bullying and teen suicide. Book sales will be provided by Books & Company at the 7 - 8:30 program with a book signing to follow. This event was sponsored in part by the Centerville-Washington Foundation. The Washington-Centerville Library Teen Department is thrilled to announce that young adult writer Jay Asher, author of Thirteen Reasons Why, will be visiting the Centerville Library on October 19! Jay will host two programs, one exclusively for teens in grades 6 - 12 from 4 - 5pm (registration required), and one for the general public from 7 - 8:30pm (registration not required, but space is limited). Jay will discuss his book, answer questions, talk about bullying and teen suicide, and sign your copy. Books & Company will provide book sales at the 7 - 8:30 program. A huge congratulations to the winning band of the Centerville-Washington Township Battle of the Bands, Eyes to the Blind.
